Most of us suffer from at least one of the most common health conditions to a certain degree. This is one of the most popular reasons for not getting life insurance. It is common notion that because of this condition, you are no longer qualified for one, or it will be very expensive. However, this is not always the case. There can be available and affordable life insurance options despite having one of these conditions. Having one illness does not necessarily mean higher rates. Insurers also factor in the severity and how manageable the illness is.
Most insurers will classify candidates as standard or preferred. If you are in peak health, maybe even a preferred plus. There is a 20% - 30% price difference for each class. Below are the most common illnesses and how it affects our life insurance. Obesity This is one of the most common health conditions as a majority of us are affected by this. Typically, insurers will measure your body mass index (BMI) as basis in measuring the obesity level. If your BMI does not go beyond 28, you can be classified as preferred plus. A maximum of 34 for preferred and a maximum of 38 for standard. High Cholesterol Another common illness is having high cholesterol. In fact, millions of Americans over 20 have high cholesterol levels. The threshold for cholesterol is 200 mg/dL. At a maximum of 220 mg/dL you are still preferred plus. If you reach 250 mg/dL you are still qualified as preferred. You are standard at a maximum of 350 Mg/dL. Hypertension Hypertension or high blood pressure can lead to more serious illnesses if it is not managed. Insurers will check if it is manageable with medication and the severity of your condition. A blood pressure lower than 140/90 without medication will warrant a preferred classification. A blood pressure of 150/90 can still be classified as standard. Anxiety Often overlooked are mental illnesses. However, anxiety has affected about 18% of the nation. This makes it the most common form of mental illness. This can lead into more serious conditions like depression, insomnia, and even substance abuse. Even if you suffer from anxiety, it is possible to still qualify as preferred if you are under care of a physician. Conclusion It is a fact that millions of people suffer from the illnesses described above but are still preferred clients for life insurance. Do not let this keep you from getting life insurance you need. If you are suffering from any of the illnesses above, make sure to treat it properly.
