One of the best ways to enjoy a nice sunny day is to go out and have a barbeque in the backyard. Imagine a nice cold beer in one hand while flipping burgers in the other. Trying out your new barbeque sauce on a big slab of ribs, caramelizing beside some fresh corn on the cob. It's not something that we think of often, but grilling can also be dangerous. In fact, millions of dollars in property damage are reported each year due to accidents on home grilling It can be a danger to your home, and to your loved ones living in it. Have fun, but also keep safe with the following grilling tips.
1. Properly maintain your grill Before grilling, always check connections and hoses for leaks. Look for leaks not just in the grill itself, but from the tank all the way through. A good way to check for leaks is to use a soap and water solution. Apply this around the hose and connection areas. Open the gas valve. You will see bubbles form in areas with a leak. After using the grill, clean it properly. This extends the life of your grill and lessens damage from wear and tear. The better condition your grill is in, the safer the cooking. 2. Grill in an open and stable area Make sure the grill is upright in a flat surface. It should be clear of anything that might catch fire especially during flare ups. Watch out for overhanging things like tree branches. Never leave a lit grill alone, and do not move it around. There should be proper ventilation and it's best if there is no structure within its vicinity. 3. Take precautionary measures Always have a fire extinguisher nearby. Some baking soda or a bucket of sand within reach would also be good. Do not use water to put out a grease fire. Keep a first aid kit in the house. Make sure you have burn medication and bandages available in case. 4. Limit alcohol consumption while grilling It is common to drink while grilling. However, do not forget that dealing with fire is dangerous, hence a clear mind is always needed. Be responsible and limit the drinking while grilling. Conclusion A barbeque is only fun if there were no accidents while grilling. Always be responsible and careful when having a barbeque. I am going to grill for my family for the first time this Friday. I am a little scared that I'll cause an accident of some kind. However, I'll take your advice and have some bandages and burn medication on standby.
